Basic Wildland Fire Course
On the 19th & 20th of June Meagher County Fire put on a Basic Wildland Fire Training at the Fire Training Center in White Sulphur Springs. The training course is required for new firemen who respond to wildland fires and covers Wildfire Terminology, Safety, Incident Command System, Fire Behavior, Fire Tactics and engine operations. This course meets NWCG (National Wildfire Coordinating Group) standards under 310-1.
At this training were 9 new volunteer firemen, one was from Townsend, four from Grassy Mountain and three from White Sulphur Springs. These Volunteers sat in a classroom over Father’s Day weekend, and not to mention, two of the nicest days we have had so far this year, to train to respond to fires in their community.
Instructors for the course were Jess Secrest, Otto Ohlson, Chris Davis, Owen Johnson and Rick Seidlitz. While putting this course on is a lot of work for all of these instructors, Meagher County Fire Chief would like to give a special thanks to the White Sulphur Springs and Townsend Ranger Districts for their instructors and assistance in putting on this training.
It used to amaze me to find so many volunteers in such a small community willing to give up time away from their families and jobs, but it doesn’t anymore, this is just the way the people in White Sulphur Springs and Meagher County are. In times of need there are no strangers, just neighbors helping neighbors and that’s what the volunteers of White Sulphur Springs and Meagher County are all about.
