Top 10 Reasons YOU Should Have a Colorectal Cancer Screening Test
10. At least 60% of the deaths from this cancer could be avoided if everyone aged 50 or older had regular screening tests.
- Screening tests can find precancerous polyps so that they can be removed before they turn into cancer.
- Screening tests also can find colorectal cancer early, when the chances of being cured are good.
- Early-stage colorectal cancer doesn’t always cause symptoms.
- Many insurance plans and Medicare help pay for colorectal cancer screening tests.

- The screenings aren’t fun, but neither is colon cancer.
- If you have a colonoscopy as your screening test, you only need to do so every ten years.

Colorectal cancer is a cancer that occurs in the colon (large intestine) or rectum. It is the third leading cancer killer in Montana, but it doesn’t have to be.
In 2008, 41% of Montanans aged 50 and older were not up to date with colorectal cancer screening. If you’re part of that 41%, please make a note: When you see you doctor this year, take a note reminding yourself to talk about a screening. Ask your doctor to help you decide which test is right for you.
